Sungmin had already been to a lot of places ever since he was a baby. His family travels a lot because of
their family business. Hearing different kind of languages, being exposed to different kind of cultures..
he’s seen it all.
At such a young age, he's so used to seeing new things. New kinds of food, new houses, new teachers,
new people wanting to know him...
So far, nothing stayed.
His parents are always busy. They have this way of thinking that for a kid to be perfect, he must always
be with fine things. That’s why wherever they go, they hire a great tutor for him. Bought him a grand
piano when all he needed was an ordinary one. Gave him things they thought he needed.
Everything around him was given (or you could say forced) by his parents.
One afternoon, he realized something was missing. As they were about to attend a friendly (translated
as business) dinner, they passed this university on their way to the hotel. They were in their family car.
As he was looking out the window he saw students going home. They all seem so happy.
Laughing, hanging out with friends..
He thought about his case. He sure don’t know anyone near his age but he’s good with everybody..
[So much for convincing yourself...] he thought as his head hanged low.
It's not like he's not allowed to have friends, he just don't know anybody.
His eyebrows knitted together when he heard his mother talk:
"Look at those kids, their parents just allows them to be wild,"
He wondered what it was like to have a normal life.
Then one day, he decided to say it to his father.
"I want to go to school."
"But you are already going to school."
"Not to a private tutor. A real school. I want to attend a real school."
"Why don't you apply for Europe?"
His mother threw a fit but in the end his father sided by him.
So he did apply. It was so easy. The tests didn’t even make him break a sweat. But then, they sent him
back a letter that he has to at least attend a normal school for a year for his grades to be recognized. His
father thought of talking to the headmaster but Sungmin was against it.
He wanted to do this on his own.
His father wanted the best for him so he enrolled him at his alma mater. Even if that would require for
them to move..
On the day he arrived in Korea, his parents wasn't with him (which isn’t new). As he was on his way to
their new house, he was in deep thought.
He secretly hoped this would be different.
The car stopped in front of a house with high gates. As they were waiting for the gates to open, Sungmin
noticed someone outside his window.
An ink haired boy was walking at the house next door. He was holding a book. The boy stopped walking
and looked back at their car. This made Sungmin very conscious and so he ducked in.
After that, he wanted to kick himself. The car windows were tinted.
First day of school for Sungmin.
He was introduced in class by his homeroom teacher. He got assigned to the seat at the last row. He's
the only one who didn't have a seatmate.
The day had passed and no one talked to him.
[Maybe I should have tried smiling?]
In a way he liked this.
No one is treating him special here.
Being treated like a normal kid is nice but he realized later on, being in a crowd with having no one to
talk to just feels a bit....even more lonely.
"Hey." Said by a guy seated in front of him. "Where are you from?"
"I uh..” [Did he meant hometown?] “I'm from Gyeonggi.."
"What school were you from?"
Sungmin bowed his head. He doesn't know how to go on.
The guy stopped talking anyway.
Sungmin was at the vending machine, buying a drink.
"Maybe we should invite him?"
He saw a group of juniors about to pass him.
"Eh? He's too goody goody. And you know he's the son of.."
"Hey, what's up?"
It was the ink haired boy he saw next door his new house.
The group froze.
"Oh nothing. We'll be going home now."
They immediately walked away.
The ink haired boy was left standing there with his hands on his pockets.
Sungmin was sitting inside the faculty room. He was waiting for his teacher to talk to him about his
"Hey, thanks for helping us."
"Oh, no problem hyung."
The ink haired bowed then walked away.
"He's so nice isn't he?" One teacher said.
"Yeah he's everybody's friend."
"I don't think so." the Biology teacher commented.
"Because...” they noticed Sungmin being there and so he lowered his voice a bit.
“He’s the son of Mr. Cho. Everyone's just using him and he knows it. He just doesn't mind"
Sungmin was walking at the hallway. He had just passed his English paper and was on his way back to
class when he saw the ink haired boy at the distance.
The boy was about to make a turn when another student banged into him.
"Sorry!" the kid shouted and ran again.
"Aaaaaaaiiisssssssshh!" the ink haired boy desperately tried to catch the papers flying.
He immediately went to him and helped him picked the papers. After he had collected what he can, he
saw the ink haired boy looking at him so innocently.
Sungmin thought it was cute that he had to smile at him.
After he gave the papers to the boy, he then proceeded to his classroom.
Sungmin stopped walking.
No one has ever thanked him before. It was always people doing things for him and thus he's the one
who always has to say those words.
He turned around, nodded at Kyuhyun and smiled.
After that instance, he noticed this boy more.
Sungmin was able to find a good place to stay near the school field. The Chestnut tree near the school
field had become his favorite spot. He took the bread he bought at the school canteen and looked
around. He noticed the ink haired boy at the window on the third floor.
The boy looked cute as he laughed.
He then looked at the school field, trying to enjoy his solitude.
Sungmin was reading the textbook when he realized his classmates were making some noise. He looked
up and saw the teacher talking to someone.
[It's him again...]
Sungmin saw the boy was looking at him. When their gaze had met, the new boy suddenly looked down.
The ink haired boy didn't see Sungmin smile since he was too shy to look.
Sungmin decided that if he saw that ink haired boy again, he would say hi.
As he was sitting at the school benches after school hours,, he was also waiting for the ink haired boy.
But his service car arrived way before the boy came out.
Sungmin’s class was having a physical ed class at the school field. He was sitting under the chestnut tree,
waiting to be called.
When the soccer ball ran past him, he volunteered to get it. As he turned around, he looked at the 3rd
floor and saw the boylooking at him up from the 3rd floor.
Then he looked confused when the boy suddenly was out of the view.
[He's not a ghost.. right?]
The car had just stopped in front of their house, waiting for the gates to open. He sighed as the car was
to go in the driveway. He again has to go inside this empty house. He vowed to himself he would stay
more in school next time.
As he stepped down from the car, he noticed someone was standing outside the gates.
It was the ink haired boy walking. It seemed the boy noticed Sungmin was looking at him so he looked
Just as he was about to smile at him, the gates had already been closed by their maids.
After school hours, he went to the faculty room to ask their music teacher if he can go to the music
room and use the piano.
The teacher immediately agreed, knowing his reputation.
He went there and saw the school piano. He was so fascinated by how antique it is. He lifted the cover
and played a note.
It sounded wonderful.
He took off his sling bag and played the song he had been composing. It sounded much better on an
antique piano. It gave each note he played a nostalgic touch.
When he suddenly heard a voice.
He stopped playing.
"What are you doing? Why are you standing there?" The voice sounded like it was from a middle age
"Oh.. I -uh.. I was just about to.. meet you. Uhm, let's go home?"
[A kid’s voice?]
"Let's go then."
Then he saw the school administrator passed by the door, along with the ink haired boy. He noticed the
boy's cheeks were red.
[So his name is Kyuhyun] he thought.
After realizing it was already the school hours, the thought strucked him.
[What was he doing here?]
Sungmin snapped back to reality. He was at the veranda with the ink haired boy, at the after party of the
“Are you okay? You looked like you were in deep thought.”
"Yeah I'm okay."
Then he noticed Kyuhyun was holding a glass of wine.
"Hey, are you even allowed to drink that?"
"You... give me that."
"Hyung... give it back."
Sungmin smirked and drank it.
Kyuhyun crossed his arms. "Okay, now you're just being mean."
Sungmin looked at the wine glass.
"Good, isn't it?" Kyuhyun smiled.
"No more for you."
On their way home, Kyuhyun looked out the window. Then to his Dad at the rearview mirror. Out the
window then back at the rearview mirror again.
Kyuhyun mustered up the guts to ask his Dad the question.
"I hope it's okay with you and Umma..."
"I want.. I want to enroll in a voice lesson class."
